For some people, the most painful part of shopping in Asia is the bargaining. For some though, like me, it’s a fun process. You have to admit, that India has some of the best sales people in the world. One glance at a vendor on the streets of Delhi or Agra can mean being hounded to buy something. “Madam, do you like?” as the vendor holds up a piece of jewellery.
Having spent much of my time in India shopping, I’ve discovered some hidden gems and fantastic stress -free hot spots to shop where you know you will get a bloody good price on quality products.
So here are my top 5…
#5 – Frontier Raas, South Extension – Delhi.
If you have limited time, and you are interested in some gorgeous outfits including sari’s, salwar kameez (Long top and pants or punjabi suits), this is the perfect spot. Each level is a different type of clothing. This is your mid to high end type of clothing. I did my wedding shopping here 🙂
#4 – Sarojini Nagar – Delhi
This is a great market in Delhi for clothing and items that did not quite make quality control for the overseas markets. You will be able to find sporting labels, cheap kurta’s, sandals, and so much more at a reasonable price. You can always bargain, but you will get a good deal in any case. You will also notice that it will be mainly the locals shopping here.
#3 – Fab India
Fab India is a fantastic brand with quality clothes at a reasonable price. They have gorgeous cotton kurtas, scarves, homeware and beautiful silk clothing. They are located in most major cities across India. No trip to India is complete without visiting one of their stores!
#2 Dhonk Craft – Rajasthan
Dhonk Craft are located near Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan. They are a private organisation linked to NGO Tiger Watch, providing sustainable employment opportunities to tribal communities and families of ex – poachers. They make an array of different products from clothing, handicrafts to bedlinen and toys. We love Dhonk!
Check out the amazing yoga mat bags they made for us…
And our Mantra Wild Tote Bags 🙂
Our number 1 pick….
#1 Dilli Haat – Delhi
This is your one stop shop for shoes, gems, beads, handicrafts, scarves, clothing etc etc etc etc etc! What we love about Dill Haat is that there are product from all of the states in India. The variety is endless. As it is a government initiative, the pricing is controlled and each vendor can rotate every 15 days so that there is equal opportunity for each vendor to be in favourable selling positions. You can still bargain away here if you like.
For our own clients, we finish off our Delhi day tours at Dilli Haat as it is open till late. After a day of sight-seeing, it’s a great opportunity to do some shopping and have dinner here. You can buy food representing all the different states – such variety! Our favourite are the momo’s!
So there you have it, our top 5. There are so many other great spots to shop at, but we love these places.
Have you got a favourite shopping spot in India that you have heard about or visited? Tell us about it in the comments below.

Now hassle free shopping in India – that would be a rareity! (Not that I’ve been!) When you want help there is no-one there, otherwise they are all over you and actually make shopping a very stressful process! Online works for me, but great to know there are some places where there can be a pleasant expereince too 🙂

Farah, yes it can be very overwhelming shopping in India. When you are ready to go, let me know and I’ll give you some more tips on where to shop 🙂
I live in Bangalore and love going fabric shopping, but it can be overwhelming for the newbie. So your advice for fab india (the easy option is great). Do you also know the Jaipur chain Soma? they do beautiful woodcut prints, quite like Anokhi. Which of course is also brilliant for modern interpretations of traditional fabrics in modern cuts
And I ALWAYS take guests to Hide Designs to pick up gorgeous Italian look handbags for a fraction of the cost. And then on to Good Earth for fabulous homewares. Expensive it’s true, but with that little bit more western flare that makes gifts sit more easily in with decor back home.

great advice Liz! I love Anokhi too. 🙂
